After coming close on several occasions, India’s cricket team have ended their International title draught, with a thrilling win over South Africa by seven runs. This T20 World Cup, which was jointly hosted by West Indies, saw the USA host one of cricket’s grand showpieces on the cricketing calendar.

In what was a superb tournament with plenty of shocks galore, it was only fitting that the two form teams in the tournament would face off against each other in the final. Rohit Sharma’s India came out on top on the day, but South Africa played their part in what was one of the best T20 World Cup finals in living memory.

After the emotions of India’s T20 World Cup win started to sink in, team India was also coming to terms with the news that their inspirational skipper Rohit Sharma will be retiring like former captain Virat Kohli in the T20 format.

Team India, who arguably has one of the best talent pools in world cricket, will now start identifying the players who can replace the legendary Kohli and Sharma. Here at Cric Today, we decided to go one further and offer our suggestion as to who should be the new T20 skipper for the T20 World Champions.

Shrubman Gill

Seen by some as the air to the Virat Kohli throne, Gill already has plenty of experience for someone with such a tender age. A brilliant strokemaker and batsman whose game is in sync with modern times.

Out of the three men, I have listed, respectfully Gill appears to be least qualified for the role, but his tactical awareness is a good sign that he can grow into the role.

As time is on his side, the BCCI should consider Shrubman as the new man to be appointed India captain. The Gujarat Titan captain has time on his side and will be able to improve even more in that time.

Rishabh Pant

Delhi Capitals wicket-keeper batsmen has been the captain for Delhi for some time. On the pitch, Pant is someone who approaches the game in a very fearless kind of way. No boundary rope is too small and not shot is impossible for the 26-year-old.

Rishabh Pant has been seen as a captain in waiting by several but has had to bide his time due to injury, which has seen Hardik Pandiya being given the chance to audition for the role.

Bar the disappointing season last season, Rishabh’s Delhi Capital’s are a competitive side in IPL. For that Pant deserves credit, for the fact he can inspire such a squad of players to get so high up the IPL ladder.

For passion alone, he deserves a chance at the role. There are shades of Virat Kohli in his captaincy, which is a good thing. Virat got unlucky, but no one can take away he was the leader of men.

Shreyas Iyer

After winning the IPL with KKR last season, surely Shreyas Iyer is a shoo-in for the top job? Iyer has captaincy experience, having been skipper of The Capitals. As a batsman, there’s a lot to be admired about his temperament.

Currently, the 29-year-old is not in the side, so it’s a hard pitch to make a clear case for him, to be captain right now but with competition so fierce, that could easily change. It was not too long ago, that when I was asked this question, I was pitching the idea of KL Rahul.

An honourable mention must go to Hardik Pandiya who’s been groomed into the limited-overs captaincy, but in my humble opinion, says he’s a leader on the pitch, but not a captain, they’re two different things.
