Glamorgan came agonisingly close to breaking the world record run chase. When both teams completed their first innings, who would have thought that at Cheltenham a world record-breaking score was on the cards?

Batting first Gloucestershire were shot out for 179, advantage Glamorgan then right? Ahh well, the Welsh were all for 197, a lead of just 18. This was the point where there was calmness before the storm.

The home side stuttered to 18-2, but Cam Bancroft (184 off 266 balls), skipper James Bracey (204 off 231) and Miles Hammond (121 off 110 balls), helped Gloucestershire to 610-5, game over and if anything a crushing defeat for Sam Northeast’s Glamorgan.

In reply, Glamorgan got their reply off to a decent start, but at 156-3 were in danger of becoming unstuck, but up came Marnus Labuschagne (119 off 165 balls and marathon man Northeast (187 off 277 balls) to help Glamorgan get back into contention.

When Labuschagne was dismissed, which ended a 150-run partnership, the visitors were indebted to yet another long stay from their captain, when Northeast was out caught behind, still 48 runs needed to win.

Mason Crane’s 43 did drag Glamorgan right to within touching distance of the win, but Arjeet Singh-Dale bowled a superb final over, which included the wicket of Jamie McIlroy.

This means that West Zone’s 541-7 in an Indian League game is the highest winning total in a first-class match. Honourable mention to Surrey who scored 501-5 to beat Kent last term.
