They were known as the Fab Four, four men who took the game of tennis at times of what felt like super-human levels. Rodger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, were four men, who had the best part of 80 Grand Slam titles between them.
There was an era where Becker, Borg, McEnroe and Edberg were the Kings of tennis, but the recent period of the success of the Fab Four is arguably unrivalled. Still, such success and dominance can’t last forever.
Injuries increase as you get older and even lady luck leaves you. To put this into perspective, 13-time French Open Champion Nadal is now ranked 275th in the world.
I don’t think the Mallorcan has been 275th in the world even when he started off. Most likely I am wrong, but just the concept that Rafa could be at such a ranking is almost alien.
Andy Murray has been ranked lowly too, so one should never take the good times for granted. Talking of good times, here at the-sports-buff.com, we want to reassure you that worry not, the good times in tennis are still here.
Granted, it’s not the same as before when you could cheer on Federer, Nadal or Murray, but there are new superheroes in town. One of those is in the shape of Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the defending Queens Club and Wimbledon champion.
Alcaraz is a former US Open winner too, but now the talented youngster can add the French Open to the list of impressive titles that he is winning. At just the tender age of 21, the El Palmar native has almost completed the set of Grand Slams.
Just the Australian Open has so far eluded Carlos Alcaraz. The man who in Melbourne, Jannik Sinner was one of Alcaraz’s victims as the newly crowned World Number One lost in the semi-finals to the former World Number One.
Although there might not be a fab four, there is a crop of at least five or six, who could help tennis through to the next era. Of course, I have mentioned Alcaraz and Sinner, but German Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitipas shouldn’t be taken lightly either.
The same can be said of Norway’s Casper Ruud. If one then puts that into perspective, then they will realise there is a very talented production line in the middle of getting produced.
So don’t worry, tennis is in good hands.
