Hello, good morning sports fans I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. We need to talk, we need to talk about Massimiliano Allegri, the Juventus manager, but for how much longer?
This is the same conversation that was happening not too long ago when former Napoli boss Maurizio Sari took charge of the club. Sarri, who was a former banker and a Chelsea coach, was appointed as Juve boss in an attempt to improve the playing style of the side.
How did that end up? Well, The Old Lady won a trophy, yes. But Maurizio Sari was sacked after one season. Club legend Andrea Pirlo took the baton from the veteran coach, but he too would part company with Juventus after winning one trophy, the Copa Italia.
Fast forward to this season, who is in charge? You guessed it Allegri and there’s a new manager on the block, playing eye-catching swash-buckling football. He goes by the name of Thiago Motta.
Motta is the current coach of Bologna, who as of time of writing are 3rd in the SerieA table. The former Italian midfielder has had his sides playing 2-3-5. There was you thinking that’s something you do in video games, (line-up with such a formation).
Rightly Thiago has won many accolades for the way his side have been playing and also because they’re in the lofty heights of third. All I am saying is, that Juve made the error when appointing Sarri, a manager who although skilled wasn’t built for the Juventus job.
This job isn’t for everyone and some high-profile Juventus managers have failed in the past. With the appointment of or shall I say potential appointment of Motta, The Old Lady have reverted to the tactic of looking to appoint managers with potential, rather than ones who have already fulfilled it.
I just hope the Juve board are right with this one. It’s not Max Allegri’s fault that he is up against Simone Inzaghi who is manager of Inter Milan, one of the best sides to have played in SerieA in the modern era. To use that as a measurement for the AC Milan manager’s success?
