Bundesliga champions Bater Leverkusen continued their long unbeaten run and set a new record of 49 games unbeaten, after a battling draw against AS Roma.

The Italian said went 2-0 up in this one thanks to a brace of Leandro Paredes penalties, but like they have done all season, Leverkusen battled back with an own goal from Gianluca Mancini and a Josip Stanic goal which proved to be the last kick of the game.

This match-up between the two sides was a repeat of last-year’s semi-final, where Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma got past the German side over the two legs. Just like they have on so many occasions this year, Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, who seemed down and out, managed to find a way to get back into a game.

Xabi Alonso’s men, just don’t know when they’re beaten, this evening was another example of the resilience they have had this year. Although they won’t qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League, the Italian side are fifth in Serie A, so they should be playing Champions League football next term.

Awaiting the German side will be Atalanta, who beat Marseille, the 1992 Champions League winners 3-0 on the night, and 4-1 on aggregate. The tie between the two sides promises to be a good one.

The Europa League final will be contested on the 22nd May in Dublin.
