Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund became the first to qualify for the Champions League final, after beating PSG 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate.
After losing the first leg, Paris Saint Germain would have been fancying their chances in the return leg in France. The media did go into overdrive about Jadon Sancho’s performance last week and in part, within good reason too.
But, what wasn’t mentioned as much was that PSG hit the woodwork twice. In other words, they were still in the match and tie coming into the match at the Parc des Princes.
In fact over both legs, the French champions hit the woodwork a combined six times and saw talented teenager Warren Zaire-Emery miss an open goal in the home leg.
If it’s and but, but if only they would have converted one of the chances they created, maybe we could be talking about PSG being in their second Champions League final.
As unfortunate as Paris Saint Germain might have been, credit must go to Edin Trzic’s men. They have struggled in the Bundesliga, where they’re currently fifth, but against all odds, they’re into their first final since 2013.
If Dortmund go one better and win the final, it will be just their second Champions League trophy since 1997. Just one thing, (I say that with a dollop of sarcasm), they only need to beat the six-time champions Bayern Munich or fourteen-champions Real Madrid.
Easier said than done.
