Former Porto, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Wolves boss Julian Lapotegui has agreed to become the new manager of West Ham United, replacing David Moyes who will be leaving at the end of the season.
As a football fan, the whole thing stinks. Former Preston, Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes did everything that could have been expected of him.
Historically The Hammers are a big club, but in the current climate although they do have a Billionaire owner, they’re not in the same conversation as the Manchester clubs, nor are they in the same bracket as Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham.
With the greatest respect to the East London side. They have been spending money on new players, but with the other clubs mentioned, they can do this for not just one season, but maybe three or four seasons.
I argue to completely overhaul a squad that is how long it takes. Moyes gave West Ham a trophy, a European that one at that too, what do they want from him? There are similarities to the Scot’s first spell.
David Moyes worked with what he had, achieved the best he did and the West Ham owners still weren’t impressed. David Gold and David O’Sullivan appointed the respected Manuel Pellegrini, but The Engineer struggled and was duly replaced, by who?
That’s right David Moyes, the chap they thought wasn’t good enough for the job. To bring the discussion back to the now, the new West Ham manager Julian Lopetegui is a good appointment and he is available.
With Sevilla, he won the Europa League. Some might argue, that achievement was like Brazil of yesteryear being able to win the World Cup with whoever was in charge. A bit harsh really as the teams they beat to get their hands on the trophy that season was impressive.
To sound like a broken record player, I have my reservations about this appointment. Lapotegui has been in the Premier League before, but he is building a reputation for being confrontational.
With even fewer resources at Wolves, Gary O’Neil achieved more. No, I am not saying the former Bournemouth man is better than Lapotegui, but I am saying there is a mindset issue.
If the former Spain and Real Madrid manager doesn’t get what he wants and it’s a possibility as David Moyes has had issues in this regard, then don’t be surprised to see Julian Lapotegui walk from the London Stadium.
