Good morning sports fans, I hope you’re well looking after yourselves and are in good health. We need to talk, about an issue in the sports world, football and in particular the Bundesliga.
As I am sure you’re aware Bayer Leverkusen secured their first-ever Bundesliga title after they swept former champions Bayern Munich aside to win the League with over a month of the season remaining.
Leverkusen have had to show every ounce of their battling quality in several high-profile games to keep their proud unbeaten record going.
The Bayer Arena has seen several late-late goals, which has seen Xabi Alonso’s side snatch victory from a draw or stop them from losing.
Yesterday’s 5-1 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt has seen their unbeaten record go to 48 games. The German side are right in the Benfica territory in terms of the record.
The Portuguese giants in the era of the legendary Eusebio between 1963 and 1965 went 48 games unbeaten. This is a record in European football since UEFA introduced club competitions.
‘All’ they need to do is beat Roma or avoid defeat in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final and if they do that, Bayer Leverkusen will be out their on their own with the longest unbeaten record.
That’s some turnaround from 18 months ago when Xabi Alonso took over at the BayArena. Leverkusen were in the bottom three. No wonder half of Europe wants this man.
