After a disappointing ODI World Cup campaign and struggling to be competitive in the test arena, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have appointed former Indian World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten.

Former South Africa open Kirsten since retiring from playing has earned a reputation as one of the finest coaches in the game. After enjoying success with neighbours India, the powers that be in Pakistan’s cricket board will be hoping he can translate his success on the other side of the Sub Continent.

On paper, Kirsten has an established captain in the form of Babar Azam to work with as well as a very talented team. The challenge now for Kirsten and Co, is to make sure they can marry talent with success.

That’s not the only appointment that has been made by the PCB. Former Australian fast-bowler and another well-respected coach Jason Gillespie has been appointed as coach of the test team.

Gillespie, formerly head coach of Yorkshire did win the County Championship title with the White Rose County in 2014 and 2015. Jason Gillespie also won the BBL title with Adelaide Strikers, which only further demonstrates the former Aussie quick’s appointment is one of real pedigree.

Jason Gillespie has agreed on a two-year deal with Pakistan, as has Gary Kirsten and the newly appointed assistant coach of both T20 and ODI formats Azhar Mehmood. Gillespie will work with new test-captain Shaan Masood, who is the current captain of Yorkshire.
