Everton dealt Liverpool’s title hopes a serious blow, after winning 2-0 at Goodison Park against their arch-rivals on Wednesday night. Jurgen Klopp’s men could have conceded an early penalty, but that would get overturned by VAR.

That should have been the warning sign for Liverpool, but it wasn’t. Jared Branthwaite who has arguably been one of the best players in Everton’s season, put the home side ahead in the 27th minute.

Liverpool did have chances and the better of the possession, but it would be the home side Everton who appeared the more threatening.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had been subject to criticism a few weeks earlier, within the past month or so, has superbly silenced those who doubted with another crucial goal in one of the biggest games in Everton’s Premier League season.

It’s been a drama-filled season for Everton, on and off the pitch, in part due to no fault of their own. Despite the continuous upheaval, The Toffees always seem to find a way to overcome adversity.

At the start of the season, The Merseysiders did start the season slowly and then would go unbeaten for nearly two months, only to then go on a winless run of a similar time frame.

But like they did earlier in the season, they have been able to show a lot of battling qualities. This latest result means that Everton have lost just once in their last five games.

As for Liverpool, this result only emphasises what’s been a difficult month for Jurgen Klopp’s men. This defeat means that they’re now three points behind Arsenal, with the same amount of games played.

Both the Gunners and The Reds will be weary of Manchester City needing to play their two games in hand. If the Cityzens win those games, then Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League will be essentially over.
