Bayern Munich are no longer champions of Germany. Sports fans, this isn’t a drill, nor this is a typo. The German giants, the 11-time defending champions are no longer the kings of Deutschland.

After Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-0 against Werder Bremen on Sunday, this was the day that sports fans in Germany, welcomed a new domestic title winner. Not since Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in 2012 and 2013 has there been another title winner since The Bavarians.

Fast forward to 2024 and the world of football is congratulating Bayer Leverkusen as the champions of Germany. Surprise package some may say? To have a 15-point lead over the former champs and to have beaten them 3-0 in your backyard is no mean feat.

Leverkusen’s team has been superb, but arguably none of the players are household names. Frimpong, Xhaka and Florian Wirtz for example are players who are now seen as very talented after this year’s exploits.

Bayer Leverkusen’s fans will enjoy this title win, a first in their 110-year history. On the flip side for the new champions of Germany, their worry will be how many of this title-winning side will be playing with Leverkusen for next season.

This is my first proper piece since coming out of a self-imposed writing break, (which was needed). Sorry for the ‘ring rust’. I said about not knowing which players will be with Bayer for next season, there was a time when the future of their manager was far from certain.

As hunters Bayer Leverkusen was superb, Xabi Alonso’s side won the title without losing a game. The challenge now is for them to come back and defend their title. Next year will be more difficult than this year, I have no doubts about that.
