What promised to be an encouraging test series went from bad to worse for England as they were well beaten by India by an innings and 64 runs. This latest defeat means that The Three Lions who won the first test to initially lead the series, inexplicably lost the next four.

Why I use the word inexplicably is because England will be surely kicking themselves. There were many times in this test series that the tourists were competitive, but it would be a bad shot or a bad over and India would be given the advantage almost straight back.

Rohit Sharma’s India wasn’t even at full strength due to KL Rahul being ruled out injured and Virat Kohli ruling himself out for personal reasons. England won’t get a good chance as they had now to repeat their heroics of 2016.

Granted, Jack Leach who is their star spinner injured his knee and would go on to miss a huge chunk of the series, but for England, there are some what-ifs. If only Jack Brook could play because the Yorkshiremen have been superb at the test level.

After the game, even the usually upbeat Brendan Mc Cullum admitted his team had to find some answers. There are some positives to come out of this series such as the emergence of England’s new spin trio Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir.

In the case of Leicester’s Ahmed, he did of course play in the tour of Pakistan, but in India, there was an element of the 18-year-old becoming a man. Another example of something to cheer about for England is that they now have an established top order.

Zak Crawley more so, but Ben Duckett also have been impressive at the top of the order for The Three Lions. So, as much as there have been disappointments in the India series, there have been some plus points too.
