There was our sports desk at The Sports Buff thinking Napoli this season has been in turmoil, clearly feeling challenged by this, French giants Marseille are pleading their case to show that they re a club in disarray.
At the start of the season football fans, you will remember I was enthused about Les Phoceens. The signing of Aubemayang amongst other players, we felt was a sign for optimism, especially with the very talented Marcelino at the helm.
Earlier in the season, the Spaniard would leave when the French side were in sixth place and since then, it’s been close to all down hill. To be fair, Olympique Marseille are into the knockout rounds of the Europa League after finishing second in Brighton’s group.
The inaugural Champions League winners Marseille hired former AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso, but even he would only last for five months. Gattuso’s last match in charge was a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Brest.
Rino’s replacement? Jean Louis-Gasset. If you think that name sounds familiar it’s because it is. The 70-year-old was in charge of Ivory Coast’s initial doomed AFCON campaign.
Gasset does have a wealth experience in Ligue 1. The veteran has managed St Etienne, Bordeaux and Montpellier. Just like with Napoli before them, surely things can only get better.
