Saturday 10th February was the day that changed it all, well this appears to be the case in the Bundesliga and La Liga. In both of these respective Leagues, there was a top-of-the-table clash.
In Germany Bayer Leverkusen who have never won the domestic title, hosted Bayern, winners of the last 12 consecutive titles. When the two sides met first off, the game ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
This game however wouldn’t be so tight. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen handed Bayern the beating that they would give to title rivals in seasons gone by. Leverkusen thoroughly deserved their win.
Bayer Leverkusen now lead Bayern Munich by five points. This doesn’t mean the title is over, mathematically of course there’s so much more of the season to go, but Leverkusen seemed to have overcome a big hurdle by winning in Saturday’s game.
Moving over to Spain, Real Madrid who are top of La Liga, hosted Girona, the Catalan minnows who have been jostling places at the top of the table with them all season.
Michel’s side had only lost once all season, which was a 3-0 home defeat to Real earlier in the season. Girona, who have only been in the Spanish top flight for the past four seasons, has impressed on-lookers with their attacking free-flowing football.
Their victory in the Catalan derby against their illustrious neighbours Barcelona, was an example of Real needing to be weary of the threat that the visitors posed. On the night however Los Blancos never allowed the visitors to get near to them.
An early Vinicius goal and a Jude Bellingham strike after 35 minutes, arguably killed the game off. Real hadn’t finished there.
A second Bellingham goal and a Rodrygo goal put some gloss on the scoreline.
Joselu, saw his late penalty strike the post. Just like in the Bundesliga, although it’s not mathematically over, Real appeared to have taken a big step toward winning this year’s La Liga.
