West Ham United have completed the signing of the highly sought-after Kalvin Phillips, until the end of the season. The former Leeds United midfielder, 28, played a starring role for England in the delayed 2020 European Championships.
With this summer being a European Championship year, it was inevitable that Phillips, who had been dubbed ‘The Yorkshire Pirlo’ would want to move clubs to get more playing time.
In July 2022, champions Manchester City were after some defensive midfield reinforcements and in the form of Kalvin Phillips who exceeded under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola’s mentor Marcelo Bielsa, City thought they found their man.
The Cityzens paid Leeds £45 million for Phillips, getting him on a six-year deal. Having come off the back of a stellar campaign in the Euro’s, the sky seemed to be the limit, especially as Man City were entering a post-Fernandinho era.
Sadly for both City and Kalvin Phillips, this deal appeared doomed from the start. A move, be it a loan could help both parties. For the player, it’s hoped he will be able to rediscover his form of old and for West Ham, well they have been able to bring another body in midfield, as they’re currently a bit light in that area.
