Gaizka Grantino’s side would controversially have two goals ruled out due to VAR. That issue alone will provoke a debate about impartiality. Arguably it’s the same in England, the big sides get the better of the VAR decisions.

Not take anything away from the 14-time Champions League winners, who have lost just once this season and are locked in an exciting title tussle with a Catalan giant. No, not them, I am referring to Girona.

The Catalonia club themselves dropped points last time after being held to a 0-0 draw against the La Liga strugglers. Almeria, looked like they were going to affect the title race for the second week running, but Dani Carvajal would break the hearts of Rojiblancos fans, by scoring a winner nine minutes into stoppage time.

A result that was harsh on Almeria, but this result for Real, has gone a long way to show how resilient Carlo Ancelotti’s side is. Real Madrid will take some catching.
