After several names were mentioned, it’s Steven Smith a familiar name that will partner Usman Khawaja in the up-and-coming series with West Indies.

The 34-year-old Smith is a surprising choice as in his 167 first-class career he has never opened the batting.

Smith, started his career as a leg-spinner who could also bat. The former Australian captain started his career batting at number eight, for the majority of his career he has batted at three or four.

Steve Smith opening the batting is a very selfless move, it’s believed that Cameron Green will be returning to the side, where he will bat at four.
Being an opener isn’t something completely alien to the 34-year-old, he has batted twice in T20Is as an opener.
