Hello, good afternoon I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. Sports fans, we need to talk about an issue that I see as important in the world of sports.
The issue I want to talk about is football, but to be more precise the football transfer side of things.
With the January transfer window open, I Ayyaz Malik at The Sports Buff, think clubs could do with changing tact.
Clubs in the past have operated the French market and that’s still reliable as ever. The German market and Spanish market is good, but more for the selling club.
The reason why I say this as it’s usually the English clubs sniffing around for talent in these parts of Europe.
One part of Europe that’s getting neglected is the UK, Scotland to be more precise. Celtic’s academy for example tends to produce talented player after talented player.
Sure they buy a good chunk of the Japanese population of players these days, but your Ryan Christie’s and Callum McGregor’s of this world have come off the Celtic Park production line.
Italian giants have benefitted from going Scottish. It wasn’t too long ago that Tiago Motta’s side sold Aaron Hickey to English Premier League side Brentford.
Call the next suggestion controversial (sarcasm overload), but youth teams like Manchester City and Chelsea are producing great players, so why not promote them?
The reason in part could be so clubs can sell their youth players for big fees, for example, Cole Palmer.
In the case of the Wythenshawe-born attacker, he was brilliant when called upon by City and is doing well now at Chelsea too.
FFP has come into full force, so clubs should be smart. The championship is also another good market to exploit.
Victor Gyokeres formerly of Coventry City, was signed by Sporting Lisbon. The Swede has impressed since moving to the Iberian region.
Ademola Lookman was a Premier League player, so maybe not the best example, but the Nigerian has excelled in Bergamo with Atalanta.
Chelsea and other clubs (err herm Manchester United) have contributed to transfer fees getting out of control, but there are bargains to be had.
It could be argued if British clubs went for Scottish talent, for example, they would be quoted a higher price.
They won’t know if they don’t ask. For every Antony Dos Santos there are in the world there’s an Andy Robertson too.
Maybe food for thought?
