The former India skipper Virat Kohli is now the highest century-maker in ODI cricket after his 117 against New Zealand.
The 35-year-old has scored 50 ODI centuries which sees him go one better than Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s tally (49).
Kohli’s knock (117 off just 113 balls) would see the ex-RCB captain finish with a strike-rate above 100, some achievement considering the no-doubt nerves he was feeling chasing such a historic milestone.
Virat Kohli’s innings before being dismissed was a chanceless knock, but even the King himself had a wobble in the nervous nineties.
Such a record of 50 centuries in ODIs won’t be broken anytime soon one would have thought.
Ominously for the rest of the cricket world, instead of going into something of his twilight, it’s like Kohli is entering a second peak stage of his career.
As brilliant as Viru’s innings was, India, on the whole, will be relieved it was in a match-winning cause.
The 2011 champions who won their second world title on home soil, posted a formidable 397-4. All the headlines would have been going to Virat Kohli, but Shreyas Iyer (105 off 70 balls), deserves big credit too.
New Zealand in reply, were brave and battled hard as they normally do.
Their Mr Nice Guy Kane Williamson is again being denied a World Cup crown, where again the cricket world sheds a little tear on such a fact.
There was not a lot The Black Caps could do. They fought hard, but ultimately ended 70 runs short.
Glen Philips (41 off 33 balls), captain Kane Williamson (69 off 71 balls), and centurion Daryll Mitchell (134 off 119 balls) were the main contributors for New Zealand.
India are through to the final where they will face Australia or South Africa, which is a repeat of the 1999 World Cup semi-final.
How South Africa would want to set the record straight, 20 years on.
