Five-time world champions Australia won a breathtaking game against Afghanistan by three wickets. Batting first the Afghans made an impressive 291-5.
Ibrahim Zadran, the Afghanistan opener 129 became the first player for the men in blue to hit a World Cup ton.
Zadran was supported by star-spinner Rashid Khan, who played a wonderful cameo with the bat (35 from just 18 balls).
In a tournament where Afghanistan have impressed immensely, Hashmatullah’s men were impressing even more here.
Australia’s usually potent bowling attack was getting taking part in the final few overs. Mitchell Starc would be the one who took the brunt of Afghanistan’s onslaught.
The Baggy Green needed 292 to win this match, a match that would see them qualify for the semi-finals. The only thing was, Australia has never chased such a target to win a World Cup game.
When Pat Cummins’s side did come out to bat, maybe this was on their mind, as Australia who are five-time ODI World Champions, slumped to 91-7.
That’s surely game over right? Oh, how wrong how very wrong! Glex Maxwell the Australia batting all-rounder, who had hit a century earlier in the World Cup, hit a quite remarkable double century here.
So remarkably, Maxwell alongside his captain put 202 for the eighth wicket. Of those 202 runs, captain Pat Cummins scored 12 of those runs.
It’s Australia who progress by three wickets and also clinch the third qualifying spot. As for Afghanistan, they will need to beat South Africa and hope results go their way.
