When Afghanistan first entered ICC tournaments, they, or at least what it seemed were plucky underdogs.
They wouldn’t get a chance to bark, but there was plenty of growl. Players such as Muneeb Ur-Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi became key players for the Asian side.
To compliment these three, the Afghans had Mohammed Shahzhad as wicket-keeper.
In several games against the bigger nations if you like, such as England and Pakistan in particular, they have had some really tight matches.
Despite the matches being tight against the 1992 World Champions, the men in green would always find a way to win.
Even with these losses in mind, it’s far from doom and gloom for Afghanistan. In preparation for the on going tournament, Hashmatullah Shaidi’s men beat Pakistan 3-0 in a T20 series.
It gets better, The Afghans have won four games in this World Cup. England, Sri Lanka, Holland and Pakistan have been put to the sword.
This Afghan team is coming of age, if it hasn’t already. These three are not household names, yet but skipper Hashmatullah Shaidi, Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahmat Shah in the middle have all been superb.
The Afghan trio have superbly complimented the opening partnership. Afghanistan have a good chance of getting through to the semi’s, but so do Pakistan.
It’s a very close and hotly contested contest for third place.
