Hello, good evening sports fans. I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. I want to talk about an issue that’s important in the world of sports.
This friends is the issue of the second season. The second season is a topic which 99% of the time is associated with football.
Here in this article, we will be talking about football too. In the life of a football manager, their shelf life isn’t a long one.
Most managers in the modern game, are lucky if they get a second season, even if they have done well in the first, such is the cutthroat nature of the beast that is.
Managers such as Chris Wilder, who did very well at Sheffield United, barely got a second season, as did then-Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa.
Even the legendary Argentine, struggled to repeat his initial success with The Lillywhites.
To repeat success is something which doesn’t just relate to managers who manage in the lower parts of the league pyramid.
Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer the former Manchester United manager did enjoy initial success with The Red Devils, but arguably suffered a gradual decline in his time in the Old Trafford hot seat.
Another manager who is arguably seeing a decline after a positive first season is current Manchester United manager Erik Ten Haag.
After ending the club’s six-year trophy drought last year, the Reds seem further behind this term to Manchester City, the undisputed kings of Europe and England.
This fact in itself is mind-boggling. The much criticised Glazer family have made £200 million available for player transfers.
Yes, they have injuries, but Man United in terms of ideas, strategy and tactics seem further away from the Premier League’s elite.
That means Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and even Tottenham are miles ahead of The Red Devils. In the case of Spurs, they too might face second-season syndrome with Ange Postecoglou.
As The Lillywhites seemed to be signing players for the purpose of a vision, it’s hard to bet against Tottenham getting even stronger next season.
Football isn’t like what it used to be, yes but managers like Pep Guardiola have shown it can be done.
As a manager, you have to get rid of the players that are causing you tactical issues on the pitch and buy the ones that give you the tactical solutions.
Seems easy enough, right?
