Five-time cricket World champions, defending T20 World Champions and World Test Champions Australia are potentially staring down the barrel of an early World Cup exit.

Cricket fans, this is unheard of. In footballing terms, that’s like Germany getting knocked out in the group stages.

Of course, Die Mannschaft have been dumped out in the early rounds of tournament competition of late, but before that, it was unheard of.

The same can be said of The Baggy Green. Pat Cummins’ side, bar the 50-over equivalent have won the lot in terms of World Cup competition, which makes it all the more surprising.

Australia have played their big hitters too. David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith as well as star bowlers Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazelwood.

This by no means is an Aussie second XI. But the issue is where certain players have been batting. I take a massive exception to Mitch Marsh opening the batting.

Marsh who captained the side in the series before the World Cup has been more destructive at three.

The fact the Perth Scorchers man is opening batting shows that the selectors have been able to source an opener. A natural opener. maybe in the mould of Adam Finch.

In terms of the last game in particular, Australia’s famed seam attack, which is made up of Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood instead of being a source of safety for The Baggy Green, has been an area of weakness.

Between the three of them, they have been going for approximately seven an over. Although two defeats are costly, Australia do have a small chance of qualifying.

It’s the first four that qualify automatically of course. So there is something to play for for Cummins’ men.

Australia play Sri Lanka in their next game on Monday. This game has become a very important game for both sides.

Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka, have also lost their first two games. Just like Australia, they were well beaten in both matches.

If the unthinkable happens and Australia do get eliminated from the cricket World Cup 2023, it would end their hopes of an unprecedented treble.
