Yesterday (26th September), UEFA (football’s governing body in Europe), announced that the ban that had been placed on Russia competing in UEFA tournaments has been listed for the Under-17 team.

A good decision some may think, but since the initial news emerged, Ukraine, who have been involved in conflict with Russia are furious!
The UAF, Ukraine’s footballing governing body has said “We strongly urge Uefa to review this decision,”.

They have also come out and said the decision is “groundless and the decision “tolerates Russia’s aggressive policy”.

UEFA, yesterday said the reason why Russia’s Under-17 team is reinstated.

Uefa says it has “reiterated its condemnation of Russia’s illegal war” and confirmed all other Russian teams remain suspended.

“Uefa’s continuing suspension against Russian adult teams reflects its commitment to take a stand against violence and aggression,” said the organisation’s president Aleksander Ceferin.

“Uefa is determined that this position will continue until the war is over and peace restored.

“But by banning children from our competitions, we not only fail to recognise and uphold a fundamental right for their holistic development, but we directly discriminate against them.

“By providing opportunities to play and compete with their peers from all over Europe, we are investing in what we hope will be a brighter and more capable future generation and a better tomorrow.”

In reaction to this statement, the majority of Russia’s ‘adults’ as they call it, have said they want peace.

What we say and have always said is that sport is doing the dirty work for politicians. Russia’s football stars are not politicians.

UEFA have opened the floodgates, because, after this statement, Russia’s senior sides are well within their rights to appeal to UEFA to be allowed back to football’s big table.

Football is inclusive, that’s the narrative that’s always been fed to the masses. So stick with that, no?
