Ah, being on top of the world, King of the hill or top of the mountain, however, you want to word it, being better than others at something can be one of the best feelings known to man .. or woman.
That can be said in the sporting sense too. Sports fans, do you remember when Liverpool were the most successful team domestically?
Or what about Manchester United in the ’90s and 2000s? The post-millennials amongst you would be very familiar with Man City currently ruling the footballing roost.
With the examples of these three teams, they have a few things in common. It appears, or at least in football fans’ minds, they always used to get shall we say ‘favourable decisions’.
In the modern era, Manchester City get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to VAR decisions. A game against Everton comes to mind and another against Crystal Palace too.
As for United, there was a famous incident involving then-Tottenham midfielder Pedro Mendes.
Mendes, would notice Man United goalkeeper Roy Carrol off his line and score what many saw as a legitimate goal, but not the referee, much to the fury of Spurs.
Another controversial incident was against the same opponents when Nani scored against Hurelho Gomes.
The Brazilian bounced the ball once, which gave the Portuguese winger Nani a chance to tap in the loose ball from close range.
Those days are a far cry from the modern day. Man United fans are complaining about decisions going against them.
The penalties they conceded of late, the Lindelof handball if my memory serves me correctly. Also the concept of Fergie time, now United cry for more time added on.
This is new territory for Man United fans. They’re so used to getting the rub of the green. Manchester United have been on a decline, of course, they have.
The signs were there when the title drought got longer and longer, but also it’s when you hear United fans deludedly say this is our year. Yes, that does sound Liverpool-like.
Liverpool enjoyed their time ruling the roost and then passed the baton to Manchester United. The Red Devils were the same and have passed it to Manchester City.
Man City, enjoy the rub of the green, your time has come and will soon pass.
