They say it’s all about the money, money, well ..not always. For Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea, this is far from the case.

Both have been big spenders in the transfer window. In the case of Chelsea, although they have managed to refinance the structure of how they have spent the £200 million, The Blues this year have spent in the region of such a sum.

Under former Roman Abrahomvich, Chelsea would spend big sums of money, but there appeared to be a method behind the madness.

In the period of the Russian’s ownership, Jose Mourinho’s side in the early 2000s and of course, Roberto Di Matteo’s Champions League winners in 2012 are historic sides in Chelsea history.

Why I felt the need to mention such is that, yes the West London club poured an outlay in that era, but it yielded success.

This current regime doesn’t seem to have got the memo, it’s not all about the money. Chelsea are a far cry from what they once were.

With the greatest respect to both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, Pochettino’s Chelsea shouldn’t be losing at home to such opposition and that in a timid fashion too.

Having spent well over £1 billion, Chelsea with logic, should be treble winners like what Manchester City are currently.

They too did initially spend a lot of money, but just recently, a method has been developed and The Cityzens are very shrewd in the transfer market these days.

Such can’t be said about Manchester United, Man City’s cross-city rivals. The Red Devils, who were trophyless in six years, until last season and have not won a Premier League in 10 years are no closer.

They’re no closer to closing the gap on Manchester City and in turn Arsenal/Liverpool, City’s nearest challengers.

But just like Chelsea £1bn has been spent on players. Unlike the West Londoners who appeared to be in more detailed discussions about a stadium extension, The Red Devils have stagnated.

After very few stadiums in world football, Old Trafford was seen as one of the best around, now it’s a far cry from such.

Again, another example of it not being all about the money. Everton are another side who, despite spending vast sums, aren’t where they should be.

Instead of tasting the sweetness of success, The Toffees are in a sticky situation. Everton are in hundreds of millions in debt and seem no closer to finishing work on their new stadium at the Albert Dock.

Everton had spent lavishly on new players, but despite all that, these days are looking at bargain basement deals in the transfer market.
So, to conclude, spending money is needed in this era of football, but there’s a method to it. Do you agree with my observations?
