I have only just about managed to take a breath, after witnessing one of the best endings to a game in ODI history.

From the Pakistani perspective, it’s a case of coming out of this thrilling match, on the wrong of a thriller, by finishing on on the losing side.

Here at The Sports Buff, despite you the beloved reader knowing our stance, what is always the case and will always remain the case, is the need for impartiality.

Sri Lanka deserves a lot of credit. Captain Dasun Shanaka has led them superbly. The defending champions restricted Pakistan to 252 from 42 overs in a rain-affected game.

The Sri Lankan at one point appeared to be cruising at 170-2, but as is always the case write off Pakistan at your own will.

Six wickets would fall and all of s sudden, this straight knockout game, which was a repeat of last year’s final has transformed into a classic.

A run a ball was needed, which seemed doable, but the scoreboard pressure and being pegged back by Pakistan’s attack would have been playing on the minds of the 1996 World Champions.

Charith Asalanka (49 not out), staying there until the end was crucial as the 1992 World Champions were clawing their way back into the game.
In sports, a win can happen due to fine margins. Think the 2019 cricket World Cup, think the 1999 semi-final.

Some classic moments are defined by one moment. Last night’s Asia Cup game was defined by Pakistan not posting a high enough total and Sri Lanka staying calm despite the onslaught.

Last year the Sri Lankans defied the odds and won the Asia Cup. Let’s not get it mistaken, Shanaka’s men deserved the title. They were a superb all-round unit, they fielded like tigers.

This year, they have a different challenge in the form of unbeaten India, who are unbeaten in the tournament.

Rohit Sharma’s men, who are one of the favourites for the World Cup title, especially as they are hosts, will be odds on favourite to win in Sunday’s final.

It will take a brave man to look past them.
