Premier League clubs spent £2.36 billion, in what was a record spending summer. A decent proportion would have been spent by Chelsea no doubt.
The Blues did of course sign Moises Caicedo (£115 million) and Romelu Lavia in the region of £60 million.
Their spending didn’t stop there. Manchester City’s Cole Palmer was signed for £45 million and a big sum of money was spent on Axel Diasi as well.
West London giants Chelsea, have yet again under maverick owner Todd Boehly opted to splash the cash.
With an injury to star player Christopher Nkunku, a lack of a new striker through the door could be a decision that hampers their season. It did for large parts of last season.
Chelsea were in the market for several players and appeared to be having a constant battle with Liverpool for targets.
Dominik Szoboszlai wasn’t one, but Caicedo and Lavia were.
In the case of Ecuadorian Caicedo and Belgian Lavia, these two deals were almost a case of being on home under the hammer, with how fierce the bidding war was.
Liverpool lost out on two transfer targets, yes, but it’s not all bad Reds fans.
Ryan Gravenberch, who has been cast aside at Bayern Munich is a good player, when fit, available and given a good run in the side.
Just £34 million the former Ajax man cost, which is a similar fee to what they paid for Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, which is a bargain!
So, maybe it was a good thing that Liverpool missed out on those two players as they have two good players for very good prices.
Other headline moves saw Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson move to Tottenham in a £45 million deal + add-ons.
Spurs have made some efforts to address the loss of talismanic striker Harry Kane who left for Bayern Munich.
Forest were the busiest side on transfer deadline day, with seven signings made, including Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi for £3 million, plus £2 million in performance-related add-ons!
That on the face of it, sounds like very good business indeed. A transfer window wouldn’t be a transfer window without last-minute deals being agreed upon and last-minute deals falling through.
Joao Paulinha saw his deal to Bayern Munich breakthrough, which affected multiple deals in the Premier League as a result.
As disappointed as the Portuguese star was, thankfully he didn’t do a Peter Odemwingie. If you don’t know what that means, quite simply you’re not old enough!
Manchester United, who surprisingly to most conducted a lot of their business early, were almost getting into added time for completing a deal for Fiorentina star Sofyaan Amrabat.
The Red Devils concluded the deal, but they left it late. They did the deal in Fergie time.
United’s rivals and neighbours Man City, who signed the second most expensive defender in the world (Josko Gvardiol), ended up buying players to replace players who have departed.
In the case of Kevin De Bruyne, who is injured. Last year’s runners-up Arsenal, who at one stage had the most expensive player in British history, in Declan Rice, have spent big this year.
Chelsea’s Kai Havertz has been signed, as well as Jurien Timber and rather strangely David Reya. Mikel Arteta, signing players to create a challenge for yourself, that’s a Pep thing.
To use one example, is Matteus Nunes from Wolves. The former Sporting man is a good player, but why not play Cole Palmer?
Brentford’s on-loan goalkeeper is good enough to be a number one, he proved that last term. Last season so was Aaron Ramsdale, Neither deserves to be second choice, Arteta has a tough choice to make.
Although the overall amount of transfer fees was a record for the transfer window, clubs did use the loan market wisely.
Everton, who at the time of writing are at the bottom of the league, managed to secure two brilliant loan singings.
Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma will compensate for the loss of Alex Iwobi, who moved to Fulham on deadline day.
A move for Wilfried Gnoto didn’t materialise, but a move for a striker did. The Toffees weren’t able to sign Southampton’s Che Adams but were able to sign Beto from Udinese.
The Portuguese striker did score on his debut. His arrival at Goodison Park will no doubt be a boost to the club which has had a tough start to the new season.
Other eye-catching loans include Manchester United’s signing of Sergio Regullion on loan from Tottenham and their exiled striker Mason Greenwood going on loan to Getafe.
Bradford-born Greenwood has been told he has no future at the club after his high-profile court case.
That’s our look on this transfer window, with some of the signings that were made in these past few months.
We think Brighton have had one of the best transfer windows in Europe, especially with the signings of Mohammed Dahud, Joao Pedro, Tudor and Baleba, who is seen as the next Moises Caicedo.
Controversially we think Arsenal have had one of the worst due to selling Folarin Balogun and buying Kai Havertz. I know which one I would prefer in attack, it’s not the former Chelsea player anyway.
Hilariously some say that the Saudi Pro League has a spending problem. They spent less than the Premier League, but we don’t talk about that.
