Brahim Diaz, Jadon Sancho and before that Rony Lopes, are three examples of players who have been lost in the Manchester City reserve team system.
There are more examples such as Carlos Borges, who was the top scorer last year in Premier League 2, but still would end up being sold to Ajax.
The 19-year-old grabbed 21 goals in just 24 matches, When he is competing against Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, it’s going to be tough to break into the side, even with such outstanding stats.
Another player who as of today, (at the time of writing), is another player who has shown promise, but yet still finds himself walking through the exit door is Cole Palmer.
Wythenshawe-born Palmer, who has shown promise and has been in and around the first team for the past year, follows Sancho, Lopes and Diaz out of the door.
Players leave, this isn’t the problem I have. The contentious part of this all is that Pep Guardiola or even the City owners say they want to keep such and such young players at the club.
Said youngster, in this case, we want to specifically talk about Man City graduate Palmer. Cole Palmer scored a goal in the Charity Shield against Arsenal and even helped The Blues with the Super Cup.
Man City with Mahrez being sold and Kevin De Bruyne injured for a long time, needed numbers in midfield. Palmer could have played out wide and fellow academy graduate Foden in the number 10 position.
Of course, Stockport-born Foden will not be able to replace KDB, but he’s a player with flair and has shown promise when playing centrally.
Enough promise to show that Cole Palmer could have had a run in the side. The Cityzens have bought the talented Matheus Nunes from Wolves, but it doesn’t cushion the blow of losing Palmer.
The 21-year-old Palmer will be joining Chelsea in a deal in the region of £45 million.
This move seems him reunite with former teammate Raheem Sterling, who too needed a new challenge after not being given enough first-team minutes.
Does anyone notice a pattern emerging? Cole Palmer is another talented youngster to leave Manchester City and get more minutes, will he be the last?
We just don’t think he will.
