German champions Bayern Munich have signed Napoli’s Kim Min-Jae on a five-year deal after paying his reported £34 million release clause.

The Korean defender who was formerly of Fenerbahce, was an integral part of the Naples side that won the Scudetto last year, ending a 33-year wait.

Kim was a reported target of Premier League side Manchester United, but possibly due to the English side being wary of not falling foul of FFP, this could be why they stepped back from a deal.

The Red Devils have signed former player Jonny Evans on a short-term deal.

What was United’s loss is Bayern’s gain. The 26-year-old will provide competition for places at the heart of the Bayern defence.

Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt would be the usual pairing for The Bavarians, but with the unconvincing form of the former, Kim Min-Jae’s has all the hallmarks of a very shrewd signing.

Bayern, who are in the market for a world-class forward to address their goal-scoring problem, look set to sign Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

To address the lack of clarity at the back, they have opted to sign former Napoli defender Kim. This clear strategy from the 33-time German champions is impressive.

Bayern Munich did dispense of the services of Hasan Salihamidžić and Oliver Khan, of course, two people who had been key to Bayern’s off-the-field dealings.
