Real Madrid have made some steps to replace Karim Benzema with the signing of José Luis Mato Sanmartín from Espanyol. Joselu as he is more commonly known, has signed for Los Blancos on an initial season-long loan from relegated Espanyol.
The deal does include an option to buy. Fans might be forgiven for thinking that the former Stoke and Newcastle man is a replacement for departed forward Karim Benzema, but we don’t see it that way.
With Mariano Diaz, (Benzema’s understudy) also leaving, respectfully to the newly capped Spanish international, we think he will be a backup to the new striker that they get in.
Whoever this new striker is, one thing for certain is that it’s not Kylian Mbappe after the Frenchman said he will see the final year of his contract out. Englishman Harry Kane has also been linked in recent weeks, but his astronomical transfer fee (no doubt) could scupper any deal between the two clubs.
Joselu who was the third top scorer in La Liga behind Robert Lewandoski and Benzema with 16 goals last term proved he knows where the net is, but with respect, Real Madrid and Espanyol are on two different scales.
If Los Blancos aren’t able to get another striker, then one can only rationally assume that Vinicius will have more time in the coming season playing down the middle.
