In cricket, there are not many rivalries like it. Maybe Pakistan and India
top it, but try telling that newly crowned World Test champions Australia. Fresh from their triumph in London against India, Pat Cummins’ men, smell blood.

For all their brilliance towards the end of the last century and during this decade, Australia don’t have the best record against England in England. Of course on Aussie shores, the old enemy have been put to the sword many times, but in England, for some 23 years, they have not won a series.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins who had previously been vice-captain has seamlessly stepped into the role and has taken to his task like a duck does to water. The 29-year-old has shown positive captaincy on many occasions and is also a bowling talisman, he’s the leader of the bowling attack.

But to think this Australia side is brilliant solely due to Cummins is foolish, to put it mildly. Batting-wise, they’re very strong too. David Warner and Usman Khawaja, have a solid opening partnership and in Steve Smith Marnus Labushagne and Travis Head a brilliant engine room.

Smith, Labushagne and Head have already this summer shown their talent, England if you weren’t warned then, you are now. But England have James Anderson, Stuart Broad and potentially Josh Tongue too.

Tongue, who only made his debut earlier in the summer against Ireland is arguably unproven, but maybe that could lead him to have a Joffra Archer-like series.

The 26-year-old Worcestershire bowler could be the bowler to ruffle up Smith, who was tormented by Archer the last time Australia toured. The tourists arguably have the better bowling attack, but England do have a well-functioning batting lineup of their own, hence the Bazball term.

As stated by Brendan McCullum, the Aussies will be England’s biggest challenge. In Nathan Lyon, they have one of the best spinners in the modern game, England arguably are weaker in this department, but Moeen Ali is the ultimate professional and won’t shy away from a challenge, that’s for sure. The man has come out of retirement, after all.

Here at The Sports Buff, I believe this series will be one of the best in living memory. Both teams are in good form. But, it’s only my opinion, I think Australia edge the series 2-1.
