Serbian Nova Djokovic beat Norwegian Casper Ruud in straight sets 7-6,6-3, 7-5, to win his third French Open title.
Novak wrote his name into history as he won his 23rd Grand Slam title’s, more than Rafael Nadal (22) and Swiss legend Rodger Federer (20). After not being able to play in Grand Slams due to his vaccination status, Djokovic was unable to add Grand Slam titles for reasons outside of tennis.
With those issues now resolved, the 37-year-old at Roland Garros was able to take advantage of 14-time winner Rafael Nadal not taking part in the tournament due to injury.
This tournament although it was threatening to be remembered for matters off the court, can at least be remembered in part for Novak Djokovic becoming a 23-time Grand Slam champion.
For this reason alone the Serbian deserves to be mentioned or at least to be put in the conversation as one of the ultimate greats in tennis. Djokovic’s opponent Ruud can hold his head high.
Of course, it’s of little consolation that he has been a beaten finalist twice, but it will come sooner rather than later.
