ODI world champions and T20 world champions Australia completed the sweep of international titles after winning the World Test Championships. Pat Cummins’ Australia, came into the final as slight favourites against an India side who had some key players injured.
The T20 world champions did have Josh Hazelwood out injured and they too like India had little time to prepare for the final. The Indians had several players involved in the IPL, the final which went over several days due to bad weather, only meant even less preparation time for team India.
Rohit Sharma’s side who were beaten in the inaugural final two years against New Zealand were hoping they could go one better this time. Sadly for them, they were left to wonder what might have been.
The Asian side, bowling first did start well and had Australia potentially reeling at 76-3, but Steve Smith (121) and Travis Head (163) slayed the Indian attack to all parts as they put on 285 for the fourth wicket.
This partnership would prove crucial as despite a brief rally from India they were always behind in the game. At least Ajinkaye Rahane (89) and Ravindra Jadeja (48) did offer some fight, but at this point, Australia had a huge first-innings lead (170 runs).
In their second innings, Australia did lose wickets at regular intervals as they tried to put their foot on the pedal and accelerate their scoring. That was the plan, but it didn’t quite pan out that way as India doggedly were trying to stay in the game.
Aussie captain Cummins showed some mercy to India’s weary bowlers but added pressure on their batsmen. Australia had set India 443 to be test world champions. A very tall order indeed.
Despite attractive-looking knocks from captain Sharma (43), Virat Kohli (49) and Rahane 46, India were all out for 234 on the final day of a brilliant game of test cricket.
