Manchester City beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the champions league final in Istanbul to complete a historic treble. The Premier League champions who beat city rivals Manchester United to seal the double, came into this game as favourites, in the people of many at least anyway.
Being seen as the favourites can sometimes be a hindrance for a side, they feel the added pressure of being the favourites. In the case of Man City, they were made to feel the pressure at times.
There were several instances of The Cityzens rushing a final ball or panicking in possession, which isn’t the characteristics of a Pep Guardiola side in the slightest.
In fact, in the first half, Nicolo Barella should have done better when he saw City keeper Ederson err out of his box. There was also the moment where the usually very reliable Manuel Akanji, nearly gifted Inter the lead, but the Brazilian Ederson was able to redeem himself with a smart stop.
Man City seemed overawed by the occasion. The Blues were not terrible in this game, but in moments like the final ball seemed rushed and other passes too, they weren’t quite right.
Although the Premier League champions had the better of the possession, Inter Milan who were hard-working throughout played very well, their fullbacks need special praise.
Denzel Dumfries and Frederico Di Marco were menacing on either side. Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish were pinned back due to how well the Inter full-backs played.
Pep Guardiola’s Man City probed and ground the way out of the Inter Milan high press and it should be mentioned aggressive press.
In the middle of the second half, Spanish midfielder Rodri was able to rifle home a loose ball around the Inter defenders and past a helpless Andre Onana, much to the delight of City’s fans.
Italian Cup winners Inter although didn’t create too much, were undeservedly behind. Almost immediately after, Di Marco headed against City’s crossbar then headed the follow-up goalward, only then to see his shot blocked by teammate Romelu Lukaku.
The SerieA would get another chance when the Belgian striker had an effort four yards out but somehow missed as Ederson was able to save the former Manchester United star’s effort.
So Man City win this one, despite some very nervy moments, but their fans won’t mind too much now. Manchester City are champions of Europe, after completing a historic treble.
