Goals from Said Benrahma and Jared Bowen saw West Ham win their first trophy since 1970 and their first European triumph since 1965.
The Hammers who were lead by the legendary Bobby Moore in that memorable Cup Winners Cup triumph, 58 years on, win the rebranded version of the same tournament.
Italian side Fiorentina were in the contest and before levelling in the final through Giacomo Bonaventura’s well-taken goal, Serbian striker Luka Jovic saw an effort ruled out when the game was goalless.
Vincenzo Italiano’s side were well in this game and started the final with a quick tempo, but Premier League side West Ham were able to make the telling contributions in the game, two crucial goals.
What promised to be a close-fought final, at times turned ugly. Before the game, Hammers fans were attacked, but during the game inexplicably Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was struck with a coin, which saw the Florence sides skipper have severe bleeding from his head.
Former Hull striker Bowen, scored the winning goal, racing onto a Lucas Pacqueta through ball and calmly beating Pietro Terracciano.
What turned out to be the winning goal, lead the West Ham manager to run down the touchline, the Scot doing his best Jose Mourinho impression after his then Porto side scored to knock out Manchester United of the Champions League in 2004.
The Conference League win this evening in Prague was Moyes’ first trophy won as a manager. In what has been a difficult season domestically and for it to end like this, I am sure the former Everton man can be excused for a passionate run down the touchline in celebration.
Well done to West Ham Owner David Sullivan for keeping faith with the Scot this season when it was so easy to have got rid of him.
