It should have been a time to celebrate for PSG. Nine titles in the past eleven seasons means that they’re out there on their own as the most successful team in the history of Ligue over taking Marseille (10), by winning their 11th title by drawing with Strasbourg 1-1.
So why isn’t celebration time? Simply because this title win has papered over some cracks. Before the World Cup, Paris Saint Germain were impressive. Manager Christophe Galtier appeared to have cracked the code on how to get the best out of famed front three Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Post-World Cup though, their form took a nose dive. What should have been a convincing title win, turned out to be a near-photo finish. PSG manager Galtier is widely expected to leave the club, but that’s not the headline departure.
Argentine forward Messi will be leaving at the end of the season. Lionel Messi, who was the Parisians’ marquee signing two seasons back, it has been argued has been disappointing since joining the French champions.
That’s a bit harsh, especially as the team on the whole hasn’t functioned well. PSG have a big hole to fill twofold. Former teammate at Barcelona and current team at PSG, Neymar, is also said to be leaving at the end of this season.
If the ultras have their way, the Brazilian would have been gone by now. The former Brazil captain has done well with his limited time on the field for PSG, but that’s the issue when he’s on the field.
Neymar has spent so much time injured, a stat that hasn’t got unnoticed by the Paris Saint Germain ultras. Only in Paris could a title win have such a reaction.
They’re the most successful side in French history, but it can’t be denied, there’s a gloom of Parc De Princes. Christoph Gaultier is said to be leaving at the end of the season and Julien Nagelsmann is said to be taking over.
The former Bayern manager made his name working with young players, who had a point to prove, it appears on the face of it the PSG hierarchy are trying to cater to Nagelsmann in how they’re structured as a club. With Luis Campos Director Of Football, a promising partnership could blossom.
French champions are said to be close to completing the signing of Real Madrid’s Marco Ascensio, if this is the case, Paris Saint Germain have started their project to rebuild.
Nasser Al-Khilaifi and co need to realise, once they build this team with the new manager whoever he is, he will need time to build and create his ideas and philosophy of playing.
In the football world, they’re regularly compared, and I will be doing so here too. Manchester City should be the model that PSG look at if indeed they do win the Champions League, a tournament that’s eluded the Premier League champions.
