Just when the Championship couldn’t get any more thrilling, Oxford United, who seemed down and out, looked destined to drop into the third tier, have in the past two games, managed to produce two victories.
Leicester City and West Brom, who were both Premier League sides, could shockingly be playing each other in League One. This is why I love the Championship so much!
No team seems too big for it. Leeds, Norwich, Portsmouth and Southampton have been some big sides to go into the third tier. The warning signs had been there for both clubs for a while.
For the Baggies, West Brom, hiring the inexperienced Ryan Mason has proved to be a doomed appointment and also the appointment of Eric Ramsey. Leicester City haven’t fared much better.
The Foxes have clearly suffered a hangover. From Marti Cifuentes to now, Gary Rowett for the end of the season, shows how desperate they are. That comes across as disrespectful to Rowett, but the former defender’s stock isn’t the highest at the moment.
It wasn’t too long ago that Gary Rowett was dragging Oxford closer to the relegation trap door. Sorry, Tottenham fans, to throw shade on you, but last season and this season have been the only times in the Premier League when a giant has been staring relegation in the face. Otherwise, it’s unheard of.
With one automatic promotion in the Championship arguably sorted, I would say for tension and drama value, then I would say to a neutral football fan, cast their eye to the Championship relegation battle. But don’t forget the play-off race too, as that’s always tense and exciting.
