EPL clubs have voted in favour of expanding the teams that will compete in the end of season play-offs from four to six, which is the way it’s done in the National League.
This change to the play-off places will take place in the 2027/28 season. To explain the process, it was a case of four teams playing a two-legged semi-final, and the winner over two legs would go into the final, and the winner of the final would grab the last play-off place.
In the revamped model, clubs finishing third and fourth go straight to the semi-final, while a one-legged quarter final will be played between the team that finished fifth, who will be at home to the team that finished eighth.
The team that finished sixth will be hosting the team that finished seventh. This seems a little similar to the Carabao Cup, in certain respects. EFL clubs have not requested a one-leg semi-final, and from our understanding, League One and League Two clubs are happy with their respective set-ups when it comes to promotion.
