Spain and Portugal served up a footballing treat under Sunday night as the two Iberian sides played out a Nations League final that was one for the ages. Former winners Spain fell behind on the night of the resurgent Nuno Mendes’ strike.

Not to be overwhelmed, Luis De la Fuente’s men roared back into the contest with goals from Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal.

If this was any other side, La Roja might have been forgiven for thinking they had the match in their grasp, but this is Portugal, the winners of the inaugural tournament.

The Portuguese duly levelled through who else than Cristiano Ronaldo, their talismanic captain who, at 40, has shown the world he is still a force to be reckoned with.

As the match wore on, the stakes increased, and it became increasingly likely that this tie would be settled by penalties, which it was. All penalties were taken and scored with razor-sharp precision until it came to Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, who saw his effort well saved by Diogo Costa.

All that was left was for Ruben Neves to slam home the decisive penalty, which he duly obliged. If you thought International football was boring, games like this might make you change your mind.
