Former Napoli, Inter Milan, and AS Roma manager Luciano Spalletti has resigned as manager of Italy’s national team after the 3-0 defeat to Norway. The Azzuri, who have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups and are at the bottom of the table after this opening-game defeat, has resigned. 

The 60-year-old Spalletti, who surprisingly took the national team job after initially being believed to be taking a sabbatical from football, has only won 11 of the 23 matches in charge. 

Despite confirming he will leave his post, Spalletti has confirmed he will take charge of Monday’s game against Moldova. The former Spartak Moscow boss has been in charge since 2023; he took the job right after he helped Napoli win the Serie A title in 1990. 

Potential candidates could see Francesco Farioli offered the job, or there could be a second spell for former boss Roberto Mancini. It is, however, too early to link candidates to the job, but in the case of these two men, they could be interesting appointments.
