On the face of it, 2025 has been just like any other year, but in the sporting world, it can’t be any more different. In football, at times, the results can almost be predicted before they happen.

This year, however, it’s been not so much. In football, Newcastle United won a trophy after 70 years, and Premier League rivals Crystal Palace won for the first time in their history.

The Magpies overcame Liverpool, and The Eagles overcame Man City, respectively. Here are examples of two shock results, but there is more. Italian Serie A side Bologna ended their 51-year title wait by winning the Copa Italia at the expense of the mighty AC Milan.

Paris Saint Germain won their first Champions League, 14 years after the Qatari investment.

In Holland’s Eredivisie, the Go-Ahead Eagles will play European football after they won a trophy for the first time in 46 years. As shocking as those results are, it’s not just football that has seen these results.

Cricket’s Indian Premier League, or the IPL for short, has seen Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) first-time winners after 18 years. Bangalore’s opponents, the Punjab Kings, who had yet to win the tournament, were the opposition.

Golf saw the end of Rory McIlroy’s jink, too. Maybe years have passed like this, but I would be hard-pressed to remember which year.

One will be hard pressed to remember a year like this in the world of sport. The year 2025, reminds you why sport is so special.
