The world of football, as we know it, at the best of times, is a parallel universe. In this world, it’s something of a fairytale. Expensive cars that your heart desires, as well as watches, jewellery and other worldly possessions.

In contrast, the life of a football manager is deemed to be a bit more modest and not half as flamboyant. Pep in an Audi R8? Not really, but one of City’s star players? Yeah, that’s okay.

I also want to discuss their jobs. A player seems to have every right to leave for a club, and the football world will turn the other cheek. If they do comment on it, they will brush the situation off as a player’s ambition.

However, if a football manager were to do that, it would be seen in a more dim light. Harry Redknapp left Portsmouth to join Tottenham. When making the move to White Hart Lane, the legendary manager commented on wanting to manage ‘one big side before he retires’.

Of course, Pompey fans would get offended, but historically, you can’t begrudge the man. Even when teams lose players who move for personal reasons, again, it’s okay.

If it’s a manager, he gets read the riot act. Former Birmingham and Blackburn managers John Eustace left the Lancashire side to join Derby County. Considering how both are faring in the League table, it’s a shock move.

However, upon further examination, Eustace was a Derby player and lives closer to the East Midlands than he does the East Lancs. It’s divided The Rovers fan base, but I am amazed in one sense that Eustace was dumped unceremoniously by Birmingham; maybe he would have been wary of doing the same thing to someone else.
