Former Newcastle midfielder and Sporting Lisbon director of football has left his role in Portugal to take up the same role in England with Premier League champions Manchester City.

The 41-year-old will take up his new position at the end of the season, replacing Txilki Begiristan. Viana, during his time with the Portuguese giants, oversaw the sales of Bruno Fernandez to Manchester United and Matheus Nunes’ move to Wolves.

Former Barcelona director of football Begiristan has been in the same role with The Cityzens for ten years. The 60-year-old will collaborate with Viana in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Just like Liverpool before them, Man City are facing one of its biggest challenges off the pitch. Having a good director of football ensured a period of stability on the pitch alongside unprecedented success.
