The former Inter Milan manager has announced he will leave AC Milan after five years in charge of the Rossaneri. Pioli, a former postman by trade leaves the San Siro-based club after finishing second this season to run-away leaders Inter.

During his time in charge of Milan, Pioli did bring another title to the red side of Milan, but with Napoli winning the title two seasons ago by a big margin and Inter doing so this term, arguably the veteran coach has decided now is his time to step aside.

The former Fiorentina coach with the greatest respect for them, has spent a good part of his career lower down the Italian football pyramid, but over the past five years has shown his ability to manage at a higher level.

Pioli leaves behind a very talented squad. Fikoyo Timori, Pierre Kalulu and Rafa Leao to just name some. Sometimes in management a manager thinks there is only so far he can take a team, which arguably is the case.

AC Milan could do with a fresh approach and a new line of thinking in the dugout. Maybe Roberto De Zerbi is the man to help a new modern Milan emerge from the ashes?

Whoever they name, they have a huge job on their hands.
