Atalanta emphatically ended Bayer Leverkusen’s 51-game unbeaten run with a 3-0 win over the Germans in the Europa League final. Ademola Lookman, once of Charlton and Everton was the man with all three goals.

Nigerian international lookman became just the sixth man to score a hat-trick in a European final. Coming into the final, Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bundesliga winners would have fancied their chances, but they were no match to the Italian side’s high press.

Atalanta were relentless and fully deserving of their lead. Arguably this was a case of Leverkusen just running out of steam after an intense but also very impressive season.

It’s easy to forget this Bayer Leverkusen hadn’t won the Bundesliga before now, nor any other trophy for that matter too.

It was well-publicised how good of a season Leverkusen were having, but some were forgetting that Atalanta would be in next season’s Champions League even before the final was played as they finished fifth in Serie A.

The Bergamo-based side also were beaten finalists in the Coppa Italia by Juve. In the Europa League, they were able to put the domestic cup final defeat behind them and win their first trophy in 61 years.

This was also Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperrini’s first trophy as a manager. There is a similarity to last year when West Ham won the Europa Conference League, which saw their manager win his first trophy after a respectable career in coaching.
