Pakistan who were cricket world champions in 1992,are seriously staring at an early exit of the World Cup after surprise package Afghanistan defeated them by eight wickets.
Babar Azam’s Pakistan had won the opening two games of the tournament, where one of them was a record breaking run-chase against Sri Lanka.
In Pakistan’s other win, they managed to grind out a win over the Netherlands who were very competitive in that one.
Two games two wins, in different ways and it appeared there wasn’t too much alarm for Mickey Arthur’s Pakistan side.
Then came the match against arch-rivals India and it appears after that crushing seven-wicket defeat, the men in green have been a shadow of themselves.
After that battering to Rohit Sharma’s India, losses to Australia and now Afghanistan have followed. For Hashmatullah Shahidi’s men, this is the first time they have beaten their neighbours in eight attempts.
So Monday’s win for the Afghan’s sees them vying for a late four the place finish in the group.
If there is any form of consoling factor is that England, who are the defending champions lost to them (Afghanistan) too.
Pakistan who in the limited over tournaments have got to a final and a semi-final will be very disappointed to not be in the mix again.
In their current predicament this will almost certainly be the case. What makes this all the more puzzling is that Babar Azam’s Pakistan side has one of the bowling attacks in world cricket.
This tournament hasn’t shown that however. Of course Naseem Shah was ruled out of the tournament as was Mohammed Hasnain, but they’re bench talent hasn’t quite stepped up to the plate .
The usually reliable spin bowling department too has fallen badly. Shadhab Khan, who is also vice-captain, has been in poor form since the Asia Cup.
Paksitan’s problem is that they don’t have a spinner who’s good enough to challenge Shadhab.
In my humble opinion, the last time such soul searching for a cricket team was needed and that was with England in 2015.
We all remember what happened next. Something that would forever go down in history.
